Android O's Picture-in-Picture mode support

Postby zenner » Tue Jun 27, 2017 8:20 am

Among the many new features of the upcoming Android O that Google has showcased, one is the Picture-in-Picture mode. The functionality has already been available in Android TVs for quite a while, and Android O will expand it to (eligible) smartphones and tablets.

This new feature, as spotted by Android Police website, is now supported by Google's Chrome browser as well.

Unfortunately, it's been said that for now, the support is available only for those Chrome users who are on Android O beta.

To use Picture-in-Picture, users simply have to open a video full-screen and double tap on the multi-window button. Some of the other applications that already come with support for the particular feature are VLC, Duo and Play Movies.

Picture-in-picture mode lets users perform two tasks simultaneously on a smartphone or a tablet. They can video call or watch a video and work on a different app in the background, at the same time.

During I/O 2017, Android's VP of engineering David Burke also talked about other Android O features. Besides Picture-in-Picture mode, the OS has a 'Smart Text Selection' feature that lets users copy and paste addresses, email IDs and contact numbers more easily.

Notification Badges are also among Android O's newfeatures. With this, app icons can show notification count on the top right corner.

The new OS version also includes new limits on background location and Wi-Fi scans, helping users save more data. This is expected to increase battery life and free up more RAM.
