DSL networking with a 4 port switch (not router)

Have you green teeth too..?

DSL networking with a 4 port switch (not router)

Postby HumanPlague » Sat Jun 14, 2003 12:38 am

I have a problem.

Just got DSL from SBC Yahoo!
Got it up and running in no time. Now I"m trying to network 3 computers together using the DSL modem and the switch that I already have (don't want to spend money on router if don't have too).
Specs:
>LinkSys 5 port Workgroup Switch EZXS55W
>2 comps running Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1
>1 comp running Windows XP Home
>all have NICs
Run windows network wizard trying to get them to find each other but this is when something weird (at least I think this is kinda strange). Both computers can access the internet through the switch and modem, but not at the same time. If one comp is on then the other will say that the line is busy when you try and get online.

Any ideas on what I need to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Let me know if you need more info to solve this problem. Thanks.

Just to re-iterate. It sounds like the system only allows you to log on one computer at a time. So you would have to get one connected all the time through ICS, or if your router is capable of making the connection - use that and just connect to the router for internet.

Yeah - use a router. ICS sucks.

Hopefully Yahoo is not too complicated and allows the router to make the connection. Its possible the connection is more Yahoo software controlled...

Hmmmmm. You're right HJ - hadn't thought of that.

If that's the case - maybe there's a setting in the Yahoo software somewhere that will allow for it

I don't know. Netzero worked very hard to create a software connection manager that required it to be running at all times. You couldn't even authenticate without it.
Yahoo may have done something similar, but I am not sure.

Only the original poster can tell us what kind of software is installed on the systems. Banners and such would be a good indication of software connectivitiy.

Yeah - I know all about NetZero's POS software "solution".

I wish I could get it to run under WINE. Piss 'em all off.

Not that I really care if I can use NetZero or not - it's just one of those things that I'm going to really put my mind to someday just to see if I can do it.

Hehehehehehehehehehe

Trust me its not worth the hassel. You'd be lucky to get 31200 off the servers in some areas...

Dude - 28800 is lightning fast for me no matter what ISP I use. 8O

I can usually only connect at 26400 or 24000 - 28800 is a treat. So 31200 would be like a freakin' party for me :?

Well it's that or just forget about surfing the net altogether.

So I think you know what MY choice is

mediacom do something like this too, according to a former roomie of mine in KS. He said he has to "register" his router with the company in order to start using comps masked by it...
