Gigabit LAN

Gigabit LAN

Postby cubase » Fri Jan 28, 2005 10:28 am

Is it worth upgrading to a gigabit LAN?? I have read somewhere that is does not really run at 1000 mb/sec (megabits) anyway. Is there much noticeable difference over 100 mb/sec?

Thanks,

no, besides, your hard drive doesnt operate quickly enough for it to matter. if it comes on the board, sure, take it. but dont go buy a new card. for data transfer, you would have to have to computers set up on scsi raid, two gigabit lan cards, a gigabit router, and a cat6 cable for both. its not worth it. internet doesnt run over normal 100mps... runs like 2 mps, so the only thing you would use it for is like data transfer, but even that isnt done that often...

Gigabit lan isn't feasible for home use do to speed limitations of other things (i.e your hard drive, internet connection). Especially if you have to buy a bunch of hardware.

10/100 LANs transfer max 12MByte/s...10MByte is perhaps
more realistic...with new harddrives in all computers
and things like a daily backup or other large data transfer
needs...or distributed computing... it may make sense...
...but I doubt you will do anything like that...;)

Thanks for the responses. I guess it is either for businesses who have a large need for it (like you said Peter) or ppl who want to say they have it :P

I originally only had 10, and upgraded to 100, which was a big enough difference for what I do.
