The forums appear to be spidered

Postby Toby B. » Sun Dec 01, 2002 3:08 am

I just happened to come across an interesting find while doin a google search this morning. The find was that threads are now being spidered (sp?) by google....... 8)

Just thought I woul let you all know. I am not sure when this actually took place but it is a definate plus for the board and the site overall. :D

jeez toby, you scared me there! When I first read the topic I thought it was some new type of virus or something...*catches breath*

But, since we've been googled -> that's awesome!

That is very cool!! Maybe it will help bring in new users. We can always use more regular posters!

Foo, if I was going to post on a potential "threat" to the board I would have entitled the thread "The forums appear to have been HACKED!!"

OK a very generic/basic definition of "being spidered":

That is made possible through a mod...example...
type: longhorn screenshot ...in google...

If you post a new topic and type the title words the same order users do in google,
but not the way all pages typed it 100 times...all the world can use it, just
takes up to a month to be spidered...

Example: The news was "longhorn screenshots" 2340 pages mentioned it
...just 119 wrote "longhorn screenshot"...that's why we got number 1
A few days ago there were 11 people that searched on google for this
term and entered the board (seen from the log statistics)

Let's take a look at yesterday's forum-google stats and which search
terms were used to end in this place:

longhorn screenshot 26 14.94%
nvidea 13 7.47%
nvidea drivers 5 2.87%
amd screensaver 3 1.72%
overclocking multipliers for athlon xp 2400 3 1.72%
rundll problems nvidia drivers 2 1.14%
unlocking athlon xp2200 l3 bridge 2 1.14%
asus probe 2 1.14% vcr to video card 2 1.14%
best operating system 2 1.14%
boot disk for win xp 2 1.14%
athlon2400 1 0.57%
nvidia tv out 1 0.57% rundll nvidia 1 0.57%
athlon xp 2400 unlock 1 0.57%
unlocking xp2400 processor l3 bridge 1 0.57%
screenshot longhorn 1 0.57%
overclocking how to 2400 1 0.57%
dvd video card 1 0.57%

If you want to post a guide, search terms are essential

"Making any wheel mouse work in SuSE Linux 8.0 (and 7.3):"

Says all you need to know...but who types that in google...?

You type "linux mouse wheel problem" or "linux wheel mouse"

So if our Linux Queen wants to be in google as wheel guru :D

She could open a topic:
Linux wheel mouse problem, fix mouse wheel Linux Guide
First line bold:
Linux mouse wheel problem Linux fix for Suse Linux
for Microsoft, Logitech and other wheel mouse types

...and has a good chance to get into the top 10
for that topic in google...;)

...just as example how things work...

Yes Peter - thanks much for the info. I'll go into the Linux OS Tips and Tricks and change the order of the words in the bold type. Although I really don't care if I'm in Google or not - it may help bring people to the Linux forum.

Great info!!

EDIT: Peter check it out here. Do you think that will do it? I really don't want to start another topic for it because that's what the Tips and Tricks topic is for. Let me know what you think - I could always re-post it in it's own thread, although I think that would be redundant. 8)

It is probably easier to find now...I really just mentioned it as example, not as hint that you need to change it...;)

Yeah Peter - I know you weren't hinting. You don't seem like the hinting type - you would just tell me what you think. But it was an excellent idea so I took the initiative and changed it. Not a problem - I don't mind. Anything if it will help bring new users in.

I did the same with the other replies in that thread. Hopefully they'll be easier to find also :D
