Game copying, Yay or Nay?

Postby Zooooot » Fri Oct 18, 2002 12:52 am

What is everyone's stand on copyrights around here?

I'm in a position where I am trying to re-evaluate where I stand on the issue.

Any comments are appreciated.

Now that I can afford software, I buy it. Now that I found linux, there's little to buy :P

If I want to use it, I buy it...if it's to inform me and just want to play a few minutes with it...but one should not forget that others work hard to pay their bill this way...has nothing to do with copyright for me, those who talk about it the most usually misuse it the most...it's just about taking care that those people who worked hard get their money...

Yes, I have a new outlook on the programmer's view. Being the poor college student clouded my viewpoint on that a little.

I look at things this way. Pertaining to Windoze software - I might "borrow" a copy of something to try it out. If I like it and it runs well on my machine - I'll buy it. Linux is another story. Since it's free it's cool to copy it. However, if you find a distro you particularly like, I say show your support by throwing some money their way once in a while. The SuSE 8.0 distro I have was purchased. I could have downloaded it from the ftp site but I wanted to support the effort. I'm not saying I'll go out and buy each release - I won't. If I want to update I'll probably DL the kernel from them and install it. But by the time say 8.6 or 9.0 comes out - I'll probably be ready to buy it again.

Games - if you like the game you should buy it - for many of the reasons I stated above about Linux. You need to support the game programmers or you won't get new and better games. They have to feed their families and pay their bill just like the rest of us. However, once again, I don't think it hurts to "borrow" a game to try it out if the game isn't available in Demo form. Just buy it if you like it. 8)

My view on this is that game companys shoukld lower their prices from £40 but until they do I will keep ripping them off because I can't afford to pasy £40 for a game. But I also see your point as well but do you see mine.

Welcome to the board shinero! 8)

Yes - I can see your point to an extent. I agree that some of the games are FAR too expensive. However - those people have to support their families so they have to make SOME profit on their software.

Perhaps we should brainstorm about a direct download from game companies at a lower price in order to lessen piracy, and save on the forest killing for making packages!

Well, I drove for 40 minutes to get to the nearest Best Buy and the games were so ridiculously priced I didn't but a single one I wanted.

Got to wait for them to get into the bargain bins...
