About the main site...things that you like...and what you don't like

Postby EvLwMn » Mon Sep 23, 2002 10:06 am

Thanks for the welcome guys. I'm glad to be here. I'm sure when people start to discover this site the membership will grow. It just takes time to get your name out there. Peter, I think if you do get more geek and tech stuff on the main site you will be pleasantly surprised. Like I said - it just takes time for people to get to know you are out there.

Maybe in the future you could do reviews on things like digital cameras, joysticks, and the like. You know - something besides boards (motherboards, video cards, etc.) - there are tons of sites that already do that stuff. You need to find a niche. It would be really cool if you reviewed hardware for use with the Linux OS! Hardware reviewers all do Windows exclusively :( I've never found a good comprehensive place to find out what works well and what does not work so well using Linux - you know, someone doing actual reviews. The hardware compatibility how-tos that I have seen are not so good and some are dreadfully out of date. Just a thought.

As for avatars, I understand some of the problems and headaches involved. I think we can live without them for a while
Which reminds me why I want to start working on a beowulf-on-a-backplane design: I want to be the one to write the program called "clusterfsck."

EvLwMn I am sure that Peter would be willing to link to a review, how-to article or anyother stuff you could write up. I do not know if you have webspace or not, but if you were to have something put online you could submit the link and have it lnked to the front page.

I currently have had the same offer. Although I must admit, the website service I am using is less then perfect. I am going to have difficulties linking to individual pages (actually on my website I think its impossible)

Unfortunately, I don't have webspace right now. The avatar I use on Motherboards.org is hosted by a friend of mine on his web space. I don't think he could host me for very much more as that site is for his business - I just begged him for a teensy bit of space for my avatar :D As far as how-to's and the like, I don't know if I'm knowledgable enough in Linux yet for that big step. I can try to help people with individual problems (like I just posted in the Operating Systems Forum) with specific distros but the hardware thing is tough. Hardware is pretty touchy in Linux. I did manage to get my ATI Radeon 8500LE working with the newly released drivers though. Boy was that a pain in the @$$. I just got it working this past weekend so I don't know yet if it's stable or not. I should know in the next 2 or 3 weeks. It does display some pretty 3D though :!: And the games look pretty good. Once I'm sure it's OK I might be able to write some kind of procedure up for it but I'm sure some of the specific steps will only apply to the SuSE 8.0 distro. I just don't know where I'd host it.

Well if the page is titled Compaq Tips and Tricks by Model, it worked.

cool :D . So that means I can have reviews and what not "planted" on my site and linked to here.

So if you do put some stuff together I can host it....Although if you forward me something to put on the site (I am sorry as the format propbly wont be the exact same). I current only have wordpad to open docs. but if your willing to work with me on it, we can do that.

Hey - I can work with you. Let me see if I can come up with anything coherent for you. Most of what I would send you would be text files because they are a format that is usable universally. Even Mac's can open them

Do you have any requests as far as topics? If I can come up with a procedure for the Radeon AGP card I think that would be a good one. The problem is that I had so many problems with it that it might be hard to remember the exact steps I took to get it to work. I'll have to sit down with my notes and think.

If you have any requests on any other topics regarding Linux let me know. I may or may not be able to help. 8) As I said, my knowledge is not exactly expert on the subject, but I learn more and more every day. Linux users really need a place to get up to date info and to ask questions of other Linux users (and gurus  )

The main site actually has it's niche EvLwMn...I don't review motherboards or video cards...I create lists of all such reviews online...in in most of these lists I am internetwide leading page...from stats is 8Dimensional mentioned in 5 boards/day and several hundred sites link to me...but that all means not the visitors would write in the board...all is targeted on people without time...they read news, search for a review...and are gone...;)

Sure...if one of you publishes something tech related...mail me and you are in the news...;)

OK Toby - I'll see what I can come up with.

Peter, I guess I should have checked out the main site better before opening my "mouth". I have done so now and see what you mean. And I know all about that lack of time stuff. I seem to be afflicted with that malady myself.

I'll do my best to come up with some good tech stuff pertaining to Linux. It may take some time for the final draft to be ready for posting so just bear with me.

Guess I will do some reviews too...but competition there is awful big...the review lists have competition, but I wrote so much software for creating those pages that other websites can not easy compete...the 27 pages with 1300 motherboard reviews are created and updated with one mouse click...that's fun...the daily news still need 50 minutes work/day...but I'm working on that...

Hmmmm...why is that page so wide...? Toby...must be your link...will fix that...;)
